|Title||Chief Joe Medicine Crow|
|Medium||oil on masonite|
Portrait of Chief Joe Medicine Crow in full headdress, wearing a yellow shirt and a decorated vest, arms crossed; frame is cut with angles like arrows.
His portrait of this Crow Indian leader shows a palette of deliberately muted hues.
This portrait is of a contemporary Shoshone Indian leader and although painted in 1999, was done in a style of earlier European artists. The headdress is made of golden eagle tail feathers and is earned by striking an enemy or "counting coups".
Poulsen was born in Akron, Ohio. He was influenced when he traveled and studied art in Europe. He now lives in Cody, Wyoming.
